Darling Downs

Horse country, with the vet to match

Toowoomba and the Downs carry one of the densest horse populations in Queensland: thoroughbred stables around Clifford Park, harness and campdraft horses, eventing, dressage and show jumping, pony club and plenty of pleasure horses on acreage from Highfields to Cambooya.

Being based here means routine work — vaccinations, dentals, soundness checks — can be slotted in around your week rather than waiting for a run through the area. Most Toowoomba and near-Downs visits are available within the week, and sick horses are seen the same day wherever possible.

Local conditions matter. The black-soil plains turn to deep mud in a wet season and set like concrete in a dry one, which drives hoof abscesses and thrush one month and bruising and concussion the next. Flying foxes roost through the city and along the range, so Hendra vaccination is strongly recommended for every horse in the district.
