Equine dentistry · Toowoomba · Darling Downs · Lockyer Valley

Horse dentistry, done properly, at home.

A thorough sedated examination with a speculum and light — not a quick rasp over the fence — so your horse eats well, accepts the bit and performs comfortably.

Vet-performed, under sedation

Sedation lets Christian examine every tooth, including the back molars, and treat painful problems safely — something only a veterinarian can legally provide.

Motorised equipment

Modern motorised floats reduce sharp enamel points and correct overgrowths quickly and precisely, with less stress for the horse.

Whole-mouth check

Each visit records what was found and done, so changes can be tracked between visits.

What a dental visit covers

What to expect

  • Sedation appropriate to the horse, so the mouth can be examined and treated safely
  • Full oral examination with a speculum, light and mirror, including the cheek teeth at the back
  • Floating of sharp enamel points and reduction of hooks, ramps, waves and other overgrowths
  • Assessment of incisors, wolf teeth, caps in young horses and any loose, fractured or diseased teeth
  • Advice on feeding, bitting and how often this horse should be checked
  • A record of the visit for your horse's file

Signs your horse's teeth need attention

Is this the right visit?

  • Dropping feed, quidding (balls of chewed hay), or eating slowly
  • Weight loss or poor condition despite good feed
  • Head tossing, resisting the bit, hanging to one side or fussing in the contact
  • Bad breath, facial swelling or nasal discharge on one side
  • Young horses coming into work (wolf teeth, caps) and older horses on soft feed
Most adult horses in work benefit from a dental examination every 6 to 12 months. Young horses under five and horses over fifteen often need checking more frequently.

How a visit works

No float trip. The clinic comes to your horse.

Call or send a request

Tell us about your horse and what you've noticed. Routine work is booked around Christian's Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley days.

Christian comes to you

The vehicle carries diagnostic, dental and treatment equipment, so most work happens on the day in your horse's own yard.

03

A clear plan, in plain English

You leave the visit knowing what was found, what it means for your horse's work, and what happens next.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why use a vet rather than a lay dentist?

Only a registered veterinarian can sedate your horse, use pain relief, extract teeth and diagnose and treat dental disease. Sedation is what allows the back of the mouth to be examined and treated properly.

Will my horse be sedated?

In almost all cases yes — it's safer for the horse and allows a complete examination. Christian will assess each horse on the day. Allow a couple of hours before feeding again after sedation.

Can you do several horses in one visit?

Yes, and it keeps the cost per horse down. Agistment centres, studs and racing stables can book a dental day — call to arrange.

How often should teeth be checked?

As a rule every 6 to 12 months for horses in work. Christian will recommend an interval for each horse based on what's found.
