Wounds and lacerations

Cleaning, assessment of what's underneath, suturing where appropriate, bandaging and a plan for healing. Wounds near joints and tendon sheaths get particular care.

Colic assessment

Examination, pain relief and treatment at the property, with a clear, honest call on whether the horse needs referral.

Everything in between

Eyes, skin, coughs and nasal discharge, weight loss, swellings, tying-up, laminitis and the odd things horses do.

Common reasons to call

What to expect

  • Cuts, punctures and lacerations — especially anywhere near a joint, tendon or the eye
  • Colic: pawing, rolling, looking at the flank, not passing manure, off feed
  • Eye problems: squinting, tearing, cloudiness or swelling (always urgent)
  • Coughing, nasal discharge, fever or a horse that's lethargic and off its feed
  • Skin problems: rain scald, greasy heel, Queensland itch, lumps and sarcoids
  • Laminitis, abscesses, swollen legs, tying-up and weight loss

Call straight away if

Is this the right visit?

  • The horse is showing colic signs — don't wait to see if it passes
  • There's a wound over a joint, tendon or the lower leg, or anything that's deep or bleeding heavily
  • An eye is closed, weeping or cloudy
  • The horse can't or won't bear weight on a leg
  • A fever, with or without nasal discharge, especially if the horse is unvaccinated for Hendra
Peak Performance operates during business hours, Monday to Friday. For emergencies outside those hours, contact your nearest equine hospital — and if you're unsure, call anyway; Christian would rather hear about it early.

How a visit works

No float trip. The clinic comes to your horse.

01

Call or send a request

Tell us about your horse and what you've noticed. Routine work is booked around Christian's Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley days.

02

Christian comes to you

The vehicle carries diagnostic, dental and treatment equipment, so most work happens on the day in your horse's own yard.

03

A clear plan, in plain English

You leave the visit knowing what was found, what it means for your horse's work, and what happens next.

Questions

Frequently asked

Should I treat a wound myself before you arrive?

Cold-hose gently to clean it, keep the horse quiet and confined, and don't apply creams or sprays before it's been examined — they make it harder to assess. Call and describe where the wound is.

My horse has mild colic — should I walk it?

Call first. Gentle walking can help with mild gas colic, but a horse that wants to roll violently needs to be seen. Remove feed and note when it last passed manure.

Does an unvaccinated horse change how you can treat it?

A sick, unvaccinated horse with fever or neurological signs may have to be handled as a potential Hendra case until it's excluded, which limits what can be done quickly. It's one of the best reasons to keep Hendra vaccinations current.

Do you carry medications on the vehicle?

Yes — the vehicle is stocked for sedation, pain relief, antibiotics, wound care and most everyday treatments, so the majority of visits are dealt with on the day.

Something's not right with your horse?

Call and describe what you're seeing. Christian will tell you what to do now and when he can be there.
