Hendra virus vaccination

The only direct protection against Hendra for horses — and for the people who handle them. Essential in south-east Queensland, and required by many vets, events and agistment centres.

Tetanus & strangles

Two of the most common and preventable diseases in Australian horses. Primary courses for foals and new horses, and annual boosters for the rest.

Routine care in the same visit

Worming programs and faecal egg counts, microchipping, annual health checks and anything else your horse is due for.

What's included

What to expect

  • Hendra virus vaccination — primary course and boosters, registered on the national Hendra vaccination register
  • Tetanus and strangles vaccination (2-in-1), primary courses and annual boosters
  • A brief health check with every vaccination: heart, lungs, condition, teeth and feet
  • Strategic worming advice and faecal egg counts rather than blanket drenching
  • Microchipping for identification, registration and event entry
  • Booster reminders so the program stays current

Who should be vaccinated

Is this the right visit?

  • Every horse in south-east Queensland for Hendra — flying foxes are present year-round across the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley
  • Foals, weanlings and any horse with an unknown vaccination history (primary course)
  • Horses competing, racing or travelling — most events and many agistment centres require current vaccinations
  • Horses in contact with new arrivals, for strangles
  • Any horse that has had a wound, for tetanus cover
A horse's Hendra vaccination status also protects you, your family and your farrier, dentist and vet. Unvaccinated sick horses may need to be treated as Hendra suspects, which delays care.

How a visit works

No float trip. The clinic comes to your horse.

01

Call or send a request

Tell us about your horse and what you've noticed. Routine work is booked around Christian's Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley days.

02

Christian comes to you

The vehicle carries diagnostic, dental and treatment equipment, so most work happens on the day in your horse's own yard.

03

A clear plan, in plain English

You leave the visit knowing what was found, what it means for your horse's work, and what happens next.

Questions

Frequently asked

How often does a horse need a Hendra booster?

After the initial course, boosters are given at the interval on the vaccine registration — currently annually once the primary course is complete. Christian will confirm the schedule for your horse and record each dose on the national register.

Is the Hendra vaccine safe?

It has been given to hundreds of thousands of horses in Australia. Like any vaccine, mild swelling at the site or a day of being quiet can occur. Christian is happy to talk through any concerns.

Can you vaccinate a whole property in one visit?

Yes — and it's the most cost-effective way to do it. Agistment centres, studs and clubs can book a vaccination day.

Do you do faecal egg counts?

Yes. Targeted worming based on egg counts is better for the horse, slows drench resistance and usually costs less than routine blanket drenching.

Due for a booster?

Call with your horses' details and Christian will fit them into his next run through your area.
